Educational Experiences

I have had many different educational experiences that have added to and enhanced my

education at Auburn University. These have taught me skills in organization, communication,

compassion, how to work well with others, writing skills, and critical thinking skills.

Marriage and Family Therapy Center Practicum

I worked at the Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) Center at Auburn University during the spring of 2023. The MFT Center is where Marriage and Family Therapy graduate students provide therapy sessions for couples in the community. At this practicum, I would code therapy sessions for the graduate students to make sure they are including all of the questions and affirmations that they are supposed to in a therapy session. I spent six hours per week at this practicum as I worked with the other undergraduate students to code these sessions. I learned under Dr. Ketring and was able to further understand what all goes into a therapy session through this practicum. This was extremely formative in affirming that I do want to go into therapy in my future. Learning under the graduate program director, Dr. Ketring, allowed me to know how I could prepare as an undergrad for a future in counseling and therapy.

Immigrant Racial, Identity, and Socialization Experiences (I-RISE) Research Lab

During the spring of 2024, I did a research lab that studies the racial and ethnic socialization of African Immigrants. This lab studies how immigrants have different experiences both racially and ethnically when they immigrate from other countries, specifically African countries, to America. This research aims to understand how to help the mental health needs of these immigrants and immigrant children. Through this lab, I code interviews conducted in order to find the central themes of what it is like for an African Immigrant to come to America. We hold biweekly meetings where we discuss the interviews and themes that arise from these interviews. I additionally work on various qualitative and quantitative interviews that will be conducted in the future through the research lab. This research lab has been influential in developing my empathy for diverse populations. I have additionally gained skills in professionalism and communication as I work with graduate students, PHD students, and Auburn University employees.

HDFS Professionals Club Historian

The HDFS Professionals Club provides many volunteer and educational experiences for HDFS students. We are able to hear from guest speakers and faculty members in our meetings in order to hear from professionals in the careers we are going into. My junior year, I was the Historian for the club, where I attended executive meetings and created graphics and posted for the Club’s social media. When we have meetings or volunteer events, I coordinate with the other executive members to create and post a graphic to the club’s Instagram. This has been helpful in my professional goal as I have gained creative and communicative skills in a professional manner. As a member of the club’s executive team, I attend all meetings and volunteer events, which all have helped me to learn more about my future as a counselor.
